On Wednesday, Sept. 5, a group of grandmothers and friends will get on their bicycles and set out on a three-day, 270-kilometre fundraising ride.
On Wednesday, Sept. 5, a group of grandmothers and friends will get on their bicycles and set out on a three-day, 270-kilometre fundraising ride.
The “Grassroots Grannies” are riding to help raise awareness and funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation “Grandmothers to Grandmothers” campaign, to support African grandmothers in their struggle to raise their orphaned grandchildren whose parents have died as a result of HIV/AIDS. Three other granny groups in the region are joining forces with the Grassroot Grannies to provide support along the three-day route.
The Ride to Turn the Tide takes place Sept. 5, 6 and 7. Twenty-two registered cyclists and four support personnel are raising money toward this year’s goal of $35,000. Last year, the 21 riders who participated in this event raised more than $31,000 for the Grandmothers campaign. Each cyclist pays their own costs and all proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The ride departs at 9 a.m., Sept. 5, from the Bushtukah store on Hazeldean Road in Kanata for Perth by way of Ashton, Appleton and Almonte. The Mississippi Grannies will host the riders again this year for lunch in Almonte, and the Lanark County Grannies feed them in Perth. Day two will be the longest day, as the cyclists endure a 117-km trek from Perth through Merrickville, where the United Church Auxiliary will host them for lunch, and then on to Metcalfe for the night where the Grannies All About Kids group feed and billet the riders for the night. On day three, the Grannies all head back to Bushtukah in Kanata for a welcome home lunch and celebration, about noon on Friday, Sept. 7.

The very successful charity bike ride - the RIDE TO TURN THE TIDE - will be held again this year on September 5, 6, & 7, 2012. Last year the 21 riders who participated in this 3-day event raised more than $31,000 for the Grandmothers Campaign. This year there are 22 registered cyclists and 4 support personnel collectively raising money towards this year's goal of $35,000.
The RIDE TO TURN THE TIDE, is a three-day bike tour covering over 270 km... a challenge for most riders many of whom are members of the Grassroot Grannies. But what is very unique about this event is that three other granny groups in the region are involved, joining forces to provide support along the three-day route.
